Quick Knitted Cardigan

This simple knitted cardigan is warm and cosy and can be finished in a weekend…

You will need

  • ELLE MISCHIEF (50g balls) 12(14;15;17;18;19) balls colour of your choice: we used Palmagrey 507
  • one pair each 6mm and 7mm knitting needles
  • one 6mm circular needle

STITCHES USED
Garter stitch: knit all rows.

Single rib: 1st row: RS facing, k1, (p1,k1) to end.
2nd row: p1, (k1,p1) to end.

MEASUREMENTS
NOTE Original garment worked in size 82-87cm

To fit chest/bust: 82-87(92-97;102-107;112-117; 122-127;132-137)cm
Actual all round measurement of garment:
Chest/bust: 97(107;117; 127;137;147)cm
Length to shoulder: 63(65;68;70;70;70)cm
Sleeve length: 46(46;47;48;49;50)cm

TENSION
12sts and 21 rows = 10cm x 10cm over garter stitch using 7mm needles.

To make

Back (Worked sideways)
Using 7mm Ns c/on 62(64;68;68;68;68)sts and work in gs until work measures 48½(53½;58½; 63½;68½;73½)cm ending with a RS row, then c/off all sts.

Place markers
18(20;22;24;26;28)cm from c/on and c/off edges along one side row edge = shoulder.

The centre
12(13;14;15;17;18)cm = back neck.
Right and left fronts
(Worked sideways)
Using 7mm Ns c/on
62(64;68;68;68;68)sts and work in gs until work measures 18(20;22;24;26;28)cm ending with a RS row.
C/off all sts.

Sleeves (both alike)
Using 6mm Ns c/on 41(41;45;45;45;45)sts.
Work 5(5;5;6;6;6)cm single rib, ending with a WS row.

Next (dec) row:
k2(2;1;1;4;4)sts, (k2tog,k1) 12(12;14;14;12;12)times, k2tog, k1(1;0;0;3;3)sts – 28(28;30;30;32;32)sts.
Change to 7mm Ns and cont in gs, inc 1 st at beg and end of every 14(10;10;8;8;8) th row 4(8;5;8;6;4) times – 36(44;40;46;44;40)sts.
Inc 1 st at beg and end of every 12(0;8;6;6;6)th row 2(0;4;3;6;9) times – 40(44;48;52;56;58)sts.
Cont straight until work measures 46(46;47;48;49;50) cm from beg ending with a RS row, then c/off all sts.

To make up

Sew shoulder seams to markers. Place markers 16(18;20;22;23;24)cm down on either side of shoulder seams.

Fold sleeves in half lengthways, then placing folds on shoulder seams, sew sleeves into position.
Sew up side and sleeve seams.

Bottom welt
With RS facing, using a 6mm circular needle, pick up and k30(34;38;40;44;48)sts evenly along row edge of left front, 81(91;99;107;115;125) sts across back row edge and 30(34;38;40;44;48)sts along row edge of right front – 141(159;175;187;203;221) sts.
Beg with p1, work in single rib until 12(12;12;14;14;14) cm ending with a WS row, then c/off all sts RW.

Front band
With RS facing, using a 6mm circular needle, pick up and k107(111;115;119;119;119) sts evenly along right front edge, 21(23;23;25;29;31) sts across back neck and 107(111;115;119;119;119) sts down left front edge – 235(245;253;263;267;269) sts.
Beg with p1, work in single rib patt until 10(10;10;12;12;12) cm ending with a WS row, then c/off all sts RW.
Block garment to measurements, cover with a damp cloth and allow to dry.
