Crochet baby slippers

Wrap baby’s tootsies in these gorgeous little slippers – they are the perfect gift for a new born baby.

  • Vinnis Colours Nikkim (DK, 119m/50g): 1(2,2) ball(s) in Pale Lilac (587)
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • stitch marker

MEASUREMENTS
Age: 3-6(6-12,12-18) months
Foot circumference: 9(11,13)cm
Foot length: 8(10,12)cm
Slipper circumference: 10(12,14)cm
Slipper length: 9(11,13)cm

Tension
20 rows and 20 stitches – 10cm x 10cm worked in dc using a 3.5mm hook.

ABBREVIATIONS
ch – chain; dc – double crochet; dc3tog – double crochet three together; fdc – foundationless double
crochet; foll – following; inc – increase; lp(s) – loop(s); rep – repeat; sk – skip; slst – slip stitch; st(s) – stitch(es); yoh – yarn over hook

NOTE The slippers are worked from toe to heel. The toe is worked in spirals and the remainder is worked in rows.

SPECIAL STITCHES
Double crochet three together: This stitch is used on the last round to neaten up the edge of the slipper. To make the dc3tog in the first corner insert the hook into the side of the st indicated, draw up a lp (2 lps on hook). Insert the hook into the bottom of the same st, draw up a lp (3 lps on hook). Insert hook into next st, draw up a lp (4 lps on hook). Yoh, pull hook through all lps on hook. For the other corner complete the above in reverse.

Foundationless double crochet: 2ch, insert hook in second ch from hook, pull up lp, yoh, draw through 1 lp (the “ch”), yoh, draw through 2 lps (the “dc”). *Insert hook under 2 lps of the “ch” st of last st and pull up lp, yoh, and draw through 1 lp, yoh and draw through 2 lps; rep from * for length of foundation.

To make

1st round: make 6(8,10) fdc– 6(8,10) sts.
2nd round: 1ch, inc in bottom (‘ch’ part) of last fdc made, 1 dc in foll 4(6,8) sts, inc 2 times, 1 dc in foll 4(6,8) sts, inc in foll st – 16(18,20) sts. Place the stitch marker in the last st made and move it up each round.
3rd round: 1ch, inc 2 times, 1 dc in foll 4 sts, inc 4(6,8) times, 1 dc in foll 4(6,8) sts, inc 2 times – 24(26,28) sts. 4th – 7th(8th,9th) round: 1ch, work 1dc in each st across – 24(26,28) sts.

Begin the sole:
1st row: Work 1 dc in foll 4 sts, turn.
2nd – 14th(16th,18th) row: 1ch, work 1 dc in foll 17(19,21) sts, turn – 17(19,21) sts.

Begin the heel:
1st row: 1ch, *(1dc in foll 7(8,9) sts)**, sk 1, 1 dc, sk 1, rep from * to **, turn – 15(17,19) sts.
2nd row: 1ch, *(1dc in foll 6(7,8) sts)**, sk 1, 1 dc, sk 1, rep from * to **, turn – 13(15,17) sts.
3rd row: 1ch, 1 dc, sk 1, (1dc in foll 3(4,5) sts, sk 1, 1 dc)**, sk 1, rep from * to **, turn – 9(11,13) sts.

For 6-12(12-18)month complete the following row:
1ch, 1 dc, sk 1, (1dc in foll 2(3) sts, sk 1, 1 dc)**, sk 1, rep from * to **, turn – 7(9) sts.

For all sizes complete the following row:
4th row: 1ch, 1 dc, (sk 1, 1 dc) rep across, turn – 5(4,5) sts.

For 3-6(12-18) months complete the following row.
5th row: 1 ch, 1dc, (sk 1, 1dc) 2 times, turn – 3 sts.
For all sizes complete the following row:
6th row: 1 ch, sk 2(3,2) sts, slst in next st, turn (do not turn for size 6-12 months).
7th row: 1 ch, 1 dc in side of each st across – 18(21,24) sts. Dc3tog, dc across to 2nd last st before corner,  dc3tog, 1 dc in side of each st across – 17(20,23) sts.
Close off with a fake stitch and sew in loose threads.

To finish off
Cut a 40(50,60)cm length of yarn and thread it onto the tapestry needle. Insert the needle into a central stitch at the toe end and weave the yarn though each sts of the 6th row.

Place the slipper onto the foot and pull on the yarn ends. Knot and tie a bow, adjust the size of the bow and cut the yarn ends to the same length as the bow. You can secure the bow with a few sewn stitches around the bow and through the underlying crochet stitch.
