NOTE The cave is worked from the opening to the bottom, with one round of dc and then one round of crab stitch added to the opening. As it’s fairly difficult to sew in the loose threads with T-yarn, we suggest simply double knotting the ends, making sure to pull very tightly to secure the knot. When knotting isn’t possible, use a smaller crochet hook to pull the yarn end through the stitches, therefore hiding the end.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Crab stitch Insert hook back into previous st, yoh and pull up a lp. Twist the hook upward and yoh, pull through both lps on hook. This stitch is also called a reverse double crochet stitch and is worked backwards, as the name suggests. It’s important to keep a looser tension, otherwise completing the stitch becomes difficult.

Extended double crochet Insert hook into next stitch, yoh and pull up a lp, yoh, draw through 1 lp on hook. Yoh, and draw through remaining 2 lps on hook.

Foundationless double crochet
2ch, insert hook in second ch from hook, pull up lp, yoh, draw through 1 lp (the “ch”), yoh, draw through 2 lps (the “dc”). *Insert hook under 2 lps of the “ch” st of last st and pull up lp, yoh, and draw through 1 lp, yoh and draw through 2 lps; rep from * for length of foundation. (Can be substituted by indicated number of sts + 1, followed by 1 row of dc.)

To close the hole

Don’t remove the hook, and cut theT-yarn with enough length to sew in the end. Now pull the hook upwards making the lp on the hook bigger; this will free the length of T-yarn. Insert the hook into the front lp of the 1st st of the round, yoh and pull the yarn end through the lp. Rep for the rem 7 sts. Turn the cave inside out and use your hook to move the yarn end to the inside of the basket. Now pull firmly on the yarn end closing the hole. Use a smaller hook to hide the loose T-yarn end.

To finish

Using col B, slst to the 1st fdc. Work 40 dc around the opening, slst to 1st dc. Work 40 crb. Cut T-yarn with enough length to sew in end.
