You will need

  • 6 x 50g balls ELLE Premier Natural Cotton – 4 ply
  • 1 x 2mm crochet hook
  • wooden beads
  • 0.5m x 150cm wide calico for lining
  • matching cotton
  • 110cm x 5mm diameter rope for handles

NOTE: 2 chain = 1 double crochet
3 chain = 1 treble
4 chain = 1 treble and 1 chain
5 chain = 1 treble and 2 chain

To make

Start with the circle motifs at the bottom of the vintage styled crochet bag.
Using ELLE Premier Natural Cotton and 2mm crochet hook, make 8ch and join with an ss to form a ring.
1st round: 3ch, work 19tr into the ring, clst.
2nd round: 4ch, *1tr into next tr, 1ch; rep from * to end, clst.
3rd round: 3ch, 2tr into ea chsp to last chsp, work 1tr, clst.
4th round: 5ch, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, *2ch, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr; rep from * to end, clst.
5th round: 3ch, 4tr into ea chsp to end, clst.
6th round: rep 4th round.
7th round: 2ch, 2dc into ea chsp to end, clst. Cut off thread and pull through.

Work 2nd circle motif from 1st to 6th round
7th (joining) round: 2ch, 2dc into ea chsp until last 4 chsp, *work 1dc into 1 motif, then 1dc into 3rd last chsp; rep from * until you’ve worked 6dc into ea chsp, clst. Cut off thread and pull through.
Rep until you have joined 5 circle motifs.

Joining 6th and 1st circle motifs
Work 6th circle motif from 1st to 6th round.
7th (joining) round: 2ch into ea of next 17 chsp. Join to 5th circle motif: *work 1dc into 1 motif, then 1dc into 3rd last chsp; rep from * until you’ve worked 6dc into ea chsp, cont working 2dc into ea chsp until last 4 chsp, ** work 1dc into 1 motif, then 1dc into 3rd last chsp: rep from ** until you have worked 6dc into ea chsp, clst. Cut off thread and pull through.

Fill in stitches on each side of the joined circle motifs
With loop on hook, pass hook through 2nd dc from join, on RHS circle motif and work 2ch, turn.
1st row: work 2tr into centre (joining seam), 2ch, ss into other motif. Work 2 ss into next 2 dc, 2ch, turn.
2nd row: (2tr,1ch,2tr) into centre of 2tr in previous row, 2ch, ss into other motif. Work 2 ss into ea of next 2 dc, 2ch, turn.
3rd row: 2tr into next chsp, 2ch, 1dc into next chsp, 2ch, 2tr into next chsp, ss into other motif.  Work 1ss into next 4dc, 2ch, turn.
4th row: 2tr into next tr, 2ch, 1dc into next chsp, 2ch, 2tr into next chsp, 2ch ss into motif.

Note: on this 4th row, make sure it forms a straight line in preparation for the next row. Rep these 4 rows in all spaces within the joined circle motifs

Main body of bag

Lie the ring of circle motifs flat so there are 3 on top and 3 underneath. Mark each side for starting point.
1st round: join yarn to one side (centre of the fill-in stitches), 3ch, 1tr into next dc, 3tr into next chsp, 1tr into ea of next 2 tr, 3tr into next chsp, *1tr into ea of next 15 dc, 3tr into next chsp, 1tr into ea of next 2 tr, 3tr into next chsp, 1tr into next dc. 3tr into next chsp, 1tr into next dc, 3tr into next
chsp, 1tr into ea of next 2tr, 3tr into next chsp. Rep from * to end, clst. Cut off thread and pull through.
For the top edge, so don’t cut the thread but cont as folls:
2nd round: 5ch, miss 1 tr, *1tr into next tr, 1ch; rep from * to end, clst.
3rd round: 3ch, *2tr into next chsp; rep from * to end, clst.
4th round: 3ch, (1tr,2ch,2tr) into next chsp, *(2tr,2ch,2tr) into next chsp; rep from * to end, clst.
5th round: ss into next chsp, 3ch, (1tr,2ch, 2tr) into chsp, *(2tr,2ch,2tr) into next chsp; rep from * to end, clst.
Rep 5th round 9 times.

Split for front and back

**1st row: ss into chsp, 3ch, 2tr in 1st chsp, *1ch, 1tr in next chsp, rep from * until you have completed 26tr, 1ch, 3tr into next chsp, 3ch, turn.
2nd row: 1tr in ea of next 2tr, 2tr in ea chsp to last chsp, 3tr, 3ch, turn.
3rd row: 1tr in ea of next 2tr, 2tr in next sp, *miss 1chsp. Work (2tr,1ch,2tr) into next sp, rep from * to last sp, 1tr in ea of next 3tr, 3ch, turn
4th row: rep 3rd row until you have completed 10 rows.
Next row: work 1tr in ea of next 3 tr, work *1tr in tr before chsp, 1tr in chsp, 1tr in tr after chsp, rep from * to last chsp, work 1tr in ea tr, 2dc, turn.
Work 3 rows in dc, cut yarn and pull through***.

Return to other side

Join yarn to same chsp as previous 3tr. Make 3ch, 2tr in chsp, *1ch, 1tr in next chsp, rep from * to end, working 3tr into same chsp as previous 3tr.
Rep from ** to *** above.

Bag base

Using 2mm crochet hook and ELLE Premier Natural Cotton, make 43ch.
Foundation row: work 1tr into 4th ch from hook, work 1tr into ea ch to starting ch, work 6tr into this ch, Work back along the other side of the 40 ch in tr to the base of the 3ch, work 5tr into base of 3ch, clst
1st round: 3ch, work 1tr into each tr until you reach the 6tr corner, *work 2tr into ea of the next 2 tr, 3tr into ea of next 2 tr and 2tr into ea of next 2 tr, work 1tr into ea tr to next 6 tr corner; rep from * to end, clst.
2nd round: 3ch, 1tr into ea of next 40 tr, 2tr into ea of next 12 tr, 1tr into ea of next 40 tr, 2tr into ea of next 12 tr, clst.
3rd round: 3ch, 1tr into ea tr to end, clst.
4th round: 3ch, 1tr into ea of next 43 tr, 2tr into ea of next 18 tr, 1tr into ea of next 44 tr, 2tr into ea
of next 18 tr, clst.
5th round: as 3rd round.
6th round: 3ch, 1tr into ea of next 44 tr, *2tr into ea of next 3 tr, 1tr into ea of next 30 tr, 2tr into ea of next 3 tr**, 1tr into ea of next 45 tr; rep from * to **, clst.
7th round: as 3rd round.
8th round: 3ch, 1tr into ea of next 45 tr, *2tr in next tr, 1tr into ea of next 18 tr, 2tr into ea of next 3tr, 1tr into ea of next 18 tr, 2tr into next tr**, 1tr into ea of next 46 tr, rep from * to ** to end, clst.
9th round: 1tr into ea of next 46 tr, *(2tr in each of next 2 tr, 1tr in ea of next 6tr)twice**, 2tr in ea of next 2 tr, 1tr in ea of next 9 tr; rep from * to **, 2tr in ea of next 2 tr***, work 1tr in ea of next 46 tr; rep from * to ***. Cut off thread and pull through.

NOTE: Before joining the base to the bag, place the base onto the calico and draw around using a
tailor’s koki. Cut the fabric base 2cm larger for seams. Fold the base in half lengthwise and match these centres to the sides of the bag. With right sides facing, join to bag using ss all around. Cut off
thread and pull through.

Straps

Using 2mm crochet hook and ELLE Premier Natural Cotton, work 185ch, cut yarn and pull through. Thread beads onto chain rope at ea end. Knot ea end and make another knot on the other side of the beads to hold firmly in place.
1st round: make a loop and join to centre of ch rope with a ss. *Work 1tr into ea of next 160ch, to last ch, work ss into last ch, Work another ss across ch rope, then rep from * to end. Ss across ch rope to beg 2nd round.
2nd round: work 1tr into ea tr, working a ss across to the other side of 2nd round. The edges closest to the bead should curl. Lie the rope on the strap and enclose using ss to end. Cut yarn and pull
through. Sew in all loose threads.

Joining straps to bag

Using 2mm crochet hook and ELLE Premier Natural Cotton, make four ch ropes of 75ch ea. Lie the beads over the bag in position shown on pic. Thread the rope through the sp betw 2 tr, over the strap betw the knot and the bead, and through to the back –tie. *Cross over the rope at the back and bring both ends out to the front on either side of the sp betw next two beads. Cross over and pass through to the back. Rep from *. Tie a reef knot to end. Rep for joining other strap ends.

Lining

Lie the bag flat and measure the width across the wider part of the bag. Double this measurement and add 2cm for seams. Measure the length from the row of loops to the bottom and add 2cm for seams. For the top sections: measure the length and width, adding 2cm to each for seams. Sew the seam of the main body of the lining. Tack the base to the bottom edge and sew in place. Sew gathering sts to the upper part of the lining, fold each side in half and mark centre points. Sew hems around three sides of the upper rectangles, fold in half lengthwise and mark the centre points of each. Pin to lower bag, matching edges and centre points and gather to fit. Sew in place. Place lining into bag and sew to upper sides. Sew in all loose threads.
