1. Make a list and set budgets

Start making a list of all the people you’d like to buy a gift for this year. Include days like Mother’s and Father’s Day, anniversaries, birthdays, Easter and Christmas. Then add a little bit to cover the unexpected gifts that may come up over the year – like items for teachers and other celebratory gifts.

After you’ve made your list, break it up into spending groups – for example, co-workers R150, friends and family R250, partners and children R300. This will help you to figure out how much you need to budget for these gifts each month.

2. Stretch your gifting budget

If your goal is to stretch your budget in order to give a nicer gift than what you can really afford, why not share costs by pooling with friends or co-workers to get it? This way you can end up giving a great gift, especially when it comes to big occasions like weddings or baby showers. Diarise post-season sales and days like Black Friday to help stretch your budget even further!

3. Don’t forget Christmas

Christmas catches us at the end of the year and without proper planning can take a big chunk out of your budget. The best way to budget for big spending occasions like Christmas is to look at how much you spent the last year and divide that number by twelve for this year’s gifts. If you save that amount each month, you can cover your Christmas gifts and avoid the last-minute stress. You could even open a Christmas savings account to make it easier.

4. Always be prepared

There are times when you may be too busy to get to the shops, or a friend may pop over to visit with good news like a promotion or a pregnancy. Be prepared and keep a cupboard in your house with some essentials – blank cards, a good bottle of wine and a box or two of Cadbury GLOW – the luxurious pralines, filled with a velvety chocolate filling, covered in delicious Cadbury chocolate.

There’s nothing like the satisfaction of settling on the perfect gift – something that shows how well you know that special someone and how much you care about your relationship with them. Remember, even if a gift is small – it’s the thought that counts!
