5 Must-try Craft Trends

From mini crochet animals and bullet journals to DIY cosmetics and pebble art, here’s what you’ll be creating in 2017.

Making things from scratch, and upcycling old or inexpensive items to create works of art, is trendier than it’s been in decades.

The recession has forced us to think of creative ways to spend less, while Pinterest has made it easy to tap into creative craft ideas from around the world.

If you recently swapped your book club for a crafting club or sewing circle, you’re also bang on trend.

Applying one’s creative skills in a group setting forms part of the Maker Movement that’s been picking up speed these last few years.

Keen to join the movement or already part of it? We share 5 top craft trends you can look forward to this year.

1. Chalk paint

Annie Sloan first introduced us to this easy-to-apply paint that can transform old furniture and other décor items into striking conversation starters.

With more brands being introduced to South Africa, it’s never been easier to get your hands on a tub of chalk paint – part of the reason why it will be ultra-trendy again in 2017.

Now’s the time to apply your crochet skills to create baby unicorns, koalas and sloths, each no more than 10cm tall. Before you get started, read up on our top tips for arigurumi success.

All you need is a notebook, a pen and a system of dots to help you navigate the pages of your homemade journal.
