What is bulletproof coffee and how does it work?

Bulletproof coffee is regular coffee in which the creamer is substituted with a blend of butter and coconut or MCT oil. Research indicates that it increases your daily intake and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K and K2, as well as the fatty acids linoleic acid (CLA) and medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). The main benefits of starting your day with this fortified coffee are:

• increased fat-burning potential due to MCT content
• elimination of hunger pangs, plus you’ll stay fuller for longer
• improved mental focus and brain power
• sustained energy lasting several hours

MCTs, or medium chain triglycerides, are fatty acids that are quickly and easily digested by the liver, where they have a thermogenic effect and boost your metabolism. MCTs are burned by the body as fuel, as opposed to being stored as fat. Pure MCT oil such as Lifematrix MCT oil, available at Dis-Chem and www.faithful-to-nature.co.za, is a clear, tasteless and odourless liquid at room temperature, making it ideal for Banters who don’t enjoy the taste of coconut.

How to make bulletproof coffee

Using regular, good-quality coffee, make your cup as normal. Then add a tablespoon each of butter and coconut/MCT oil. Whizz it up in a blender or use a handheld milk frother to emulsify it all. You’ll have a super creamy, rich coffee as a result. If you must sweeten, add a teaspoon or two of xylitol.

If you don’t have time for this every morning, see our recipe for premixed bulletproof coffee pods you can pop into your coffee without fuss.
