what is a jade roller

Are they worth the skincare hype?

You might have seen these little tools all over social media (the rose quartz ones make for pretty Instagram snaps),  but what are facial rollers and should you incorporate them into your beauty routine?

What is a jade roller?

Although jade rollers are having a bit of a moment in the spotlight right now, they have actually been around since the 7th century as a staple in Chinese skincare routines. China Daily describes this tool as being made with two pieces of jade attached on both ends of a handle.

The jade roller is gently run across the face to promote blood circulation as well as reduce puffiness and wrinkles. Jade is traditionally known for its cooling properties.

So it’s basically a mini face massager that you can hold in your hand. Add to this that they are made of beautiful jade stone, known for its cooling properties and purifying energy.

What is a rose quartz roller?

The rose quartz roller is the same as the jade roller, only it’s made of rose quartz, which is also known for its soothing and de-stressing properties. Rose quartz is said to boost your confidence, increase self-love, soothe stress and ease anxiety.

How do I use it?

These little beauties are the perfect addition to your night-time beauty routine, when you can roll away the day’s stress and give yourself a proper pamper!

Simply cleanse your face and apply your usual night-time serum or oil and then roll away all over your skin. Some people even put their roller in the fridge for a little while so that it’s cold and refreshing when they reach for it. Roll back and forth, side to side and up and down. Work around your natural facial contours. Remember to always roll upwards, so from your chin towards your ear or from your mouth along your cheekbones.

Regular facial rolling is said to help with circulation and promote lymphatic drainage.

What are the benefits of using a facial roller?

Here are some more supposed benefits of facial rolling:

  • helps to improve skin’s elasticity
  • helps to tighten pores
  • reduces puffiness
  • minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • eliminates toxins

Where can I buy one?

Try your local health store, but if they don’t have yet we’ve spotted them on Takealot here and here.
