When making jams and preserves it is very important to sterilise your jars. If you don’t, an unsterilised jar could infect the contents and reduce its shelf life.
New jars also need to be sterlised. Here are 4 easy ways to sterlise your jars and bottles:
- Microwave: Half fill the bottles with boiling water and microwave for 5 minutes.
- Oven: Place open bottles with the lids on top in a deep oven tray, ligned with a cloth. Pour boiling water into the tray. Heat at 110 C for 20 minutes.
- Dishwasher: Set your dishwasher to the highest setting. Once down allow to cool and use as needed. This is by far the easiest way.
- Stove: Boil in a large saucepan on medium heat for 5 minutes.
Always remember to sterlise the lids too!
