Swipe that loyalty card

Woolworths app

If you’re a Woolworths WRewards member otr MySchool cardholder, the Woolworths app is a must. Not only does it notify you of deals and specials at your local Woolworths, it holds your coupon vouchers too – no more printouts required; it’s so much greener! Simply open the app, and allow the teller to scan the voucher codes you’d like to redeem.

Because your Woolworths card records your shopping history, your vouchers are related to your frequent purchases, saving you money on what you buy often. The app also tracks your monthly spend and savings at Woolworths, allows you to acess all your Woolies accounts, and you can even do all your Woolies shopping from it too!

Pick n Pay app

Pick n Pay’s app is perfect for Smart Shopper cardholders. Gone are the days of queueing to print off vouchers at the Pick n Pay kiosk. Simply download the app and sync it to your Smart Shopper card, and your points and vouchers are instantly displayed. Cash in your points and selected vouchers at the teller during your next shop, or convert them to cash paid directly into any South African bank account.

There’s also the option of using accumulated points to buy airtime, data or even electricity, or save them up to use at partnered retailers like Ster-Kinekor and Spur. Make sure to browse the in-store promotions to boost your points at your next shop.

Coupon queen

This is extreme couponing at its best, but it can save you a bundle! If you’re one of those shoppers who hates handling voucher slips at the teller, then SnapnSave will allow you to reclaim your purchase in the comfort of your own home. Once you’ve donwloaded the app, follow these steps:

  • Select and ‘book’ available offers you’d like to redeem. Each offer has details about its use and the stores
    where it applies.
  • You’ll then have 48 hours in which to purchase your ‘booked’ offer.
  • Once your items have been purchased, take a pic of your till slip on the app and upload it. It can take around four days for the offer to be validated and the cash amount transferred into your SnapnSave e-wallet.
  • Once you’ve accumulated some value, you can either transfer your cash directly into any South African bank account using a simple EFT or you can convert your cash into a wiCode – a seven-digit number you can use in-store at certain retailers to get the cash value off your next purchase, just like a gift card.

Keep an eye on offers as some have a limited amount and can get booked up by other app users. Just select the ‘Notify Me’ option if you’d like to be informed when the offer becomes available again. You can also follow them on social media to learn about double cash-back deals and so much more.

If you’re a frequent flyer Hopper will help you save by telling you when the best time is to buy your flight tickets. Select dates and destinations, and Hopper will predict when the flight will be at its cheapest and even recommend whether you should hang on a little longer before confirming a booking. If you decide to wait to see if the price improves, the app will send you notifications the instant the price drops or might increase. If you’re planning your December holidays, let Hopper help save you a bundle on reaching your dream destination!

Note: The app features most major airlines but not all low-cost carriers.

This nifty app brought to SA by Vodacom uses your geolocation to find the best deals and specials in your area across categories such as food, fashion, travel, entertainment, and beauty. If you’re looking to save some cash, simply open the app and browse the discounts on offer. Follow your favourite retailers and keep up to date with both
in-store and online promotions. You can also sign up to the website at Vouchercloud.co.za to see what’s on offer and print off vouchers. There’s something for everyone on this platform, and it’s particularly handy if you’re looking for gifts or even a fun outing as a family.

Stash that cash

This is a fantastic new app by Liberty for those looking to not only save but dabble in the world of investments too – without the hassels of forms, fees and taxes! This savvy app rounds up your purchases to the nearest R10 and invests the change in a Liberty fund that tracks the top 40 companies on the JSE. Every time you swipe an FNB, Standard Bank, ABSA, Nedbank, Investec, RMB or DiscoveryCard, Stash collects the digital spare change. You can also select other options such as ‘Sunny Money’, which invests a daily amount set by the user every time the weather in their location is sunny. A great way to earn interest on your spare change that could turn into some serious pocket money.

Note: for the moment Stash is only available on Android but it’s coming soon to IOS.

Apps to help you budget

While you can grow your cash by swiping loyalty cards and making use of vouchers, it’s essenital to know how you spend your monthly earnings. These apps make budgeting a breeze!

22 Seven by Old Mutual

This free app is a wonderful consolidating platform, allowing you to see all your cards and accounts in one place. Link loyalty cards, store cards, loans and bank accounts, and keep up to date with your spending. It can also generate a personalised budget to help keep track of where you’re spending your money. A bonus feature is that you can make tax-free investments through The Old Mutual Global FTSE RAFI All World Index Feeder Fund, which invests in around 3000 of the world’s top companies from as little as R350.

Similar to 22 Seven, this app allows you to track accounts and your spending, and helps set budgets based on your financial figures. We love it because it acts as a credit rating tool too – it assists with keeping track of your credit score and offers helpful tips on what you can always do to improve it.

Goodbudget allows access across multiple devices, so everyone in the family can contribute to the household budget. Its clever software not only allows you to set budgets, it’ll also hold you accountable to the goals you set, making your savings aspirations more attainable.
