Bullet journalling may just be the key to achieving your work goals in 2018. It’s a super-simple way to stay organised and structure your day using a basic notebook. Bullet journals use simple codes for different entries, and ‘bullet’ lists that are easy to follow. It takes a little time to set up but once you’ve done that, you’re good to go.
A bullet journal is more than a diary. It’s a place to keep all your actions, thoughts, sketches, plans and dreams together.
How does a bullet journal work?
Find a journal you like; most bullet journals have grids or dotted paper. In the front of the journal, you need to create an index. This will help organise the future content of the journal. Leave a few pages open for this. Number the remaining pages of the journal. As you go through the year, you’ll populate the index with entries and include their page numbers, making it easy to find entries.
Choose daily or weekly spreads, based on your needs. If you’re going to be documenting most of your work and
leisure time, a page-a-day system is better than a week represented by two facing pages. Create specific spreads, related to topics like budget, fitness routines, meal planning, doctors’ appointments, journey planners and home projects at the back of the diary. These will be pages you’ll reference often, so it makes sense that they’re easy to find. Other possible page ideas include: series to watch, wines to try, favourite recipes, websites to check out,
songs to download, and books you want to read.
Track everything in bullets. When creating task lists or event logs in your journal, use this common key:
- To denote a task, use a bullet •
- When the task is complete, turn the dot into an x
- To migrate an incomplete task to the next day, use > (then re-list the task on the next day’s list).
- Use o for date-related entries, such as birthdays or events.
- For simple notes, use –
